Mornings and evenings are ever busy in the villages. Walk through these little havens - along their willow-shaded paths, through the mud-bricked lanes lined with poplar trees and jump over water channels. Learn the importance of these labyrinths of waterways and observe Ladakhi ingenuity at its best. Mud brick houses are indigenously built using local resources, in which dwell village communities whose life reflect the harsh geographies - simple yet hardy folks who are warm and hospitable. Experience rewards of high altitude agriculture.
Ladakh summers offer a chance to witness the traditional sport of polo, introduced in the mid-17th century. Most villages have their own polo-ground and it's still played with enthusiasm in many places. The game played in Ladakh differs from the international version, with six players per team and 20-minute halves. Local ponies seem to handle the high altitude well, and each goal is celebrated with music. Polo in Ladakh is a signature experience not to be missed.
The ancient Ladakh warriors were skilled archers, and even today, the sport is highly regarded. During the annual village gathering, the community celebrates with singing, dancing, and feasting. The men participate in traditional archery, aiming for the bull's eye, while the women offer food and drinks. The winner leads the community dance to the sound of the kettle-drum. This experience allows you to try your hand at traditional archery and learn from the locals. With music and cheers to motivate you, aim for the bull's eye and enjoy the unique opportunity.
The Igoo Khaspang-Sakti trek is a short but stunning route that offers a unique experience in terms of natural beauty, spiritualism, and altitude gain. The residents in the area belong to the Drug-Pa sect of Buddhism and are mostly farmers or spiritual learners. The excursion starts with a drive to Igoo- khaspang village, followed by a walk to the Khaspang Meditation Retreat at an altitude of 3750mts. After visiting the complex and enjoying the scenery, continue walking up the rolling hills to the Khaspang La Pass (4,200mts), then downhill to reach the rustic Sakti village. From there, you can visit the Chemday Monastery before returning to the camp. The trek offers stunning views of Hemis valley, Chemday village, Sakti village, and the Wari La Pass, making it a visual feast.

The trail leads to the green farmlands of Nyerma, passing by an abandoned fort, local houses, and barley and alfalfa fields. The nunnery at Nyerma is home to 25 Buddhist nuns who meditate, chant prayers, and learn philosophy, with some also being taught English, science, and math. Located within an ancient temple complex, visitors can explore the innards of the stupas, which house special Buddhist paintings from a bygone era.
Ladakhi cuisine reflects the region's ethnicity with hot soups, protein-rich dishes, and handy breads and cookies due to the extreme climatic conditions. The inability to grow many varieties of vegetables and fruits does not take away the charm of this simple cuisine served with warmth and hospitality. Visitors can enjoy a meal at a local house and try traditional dishes like thukpa, chu-tagi, mok-mok, and khambir with freshly churned butter.
